LightSound Counterpoint
Optics, Acoustics, and the Physics of an Artistic Event
When does a physical phenomenon become an artistic event? This lecture traces light and sound as two independent physical systems — optics and acoustics — and asks what actually happens when artists try to fuse them into one medium.
Starting from Malevich's renunciation of representation and the Theremin's invention of touchless sound, the lecture moves through diffraction, coherence, and the physiology of perception, arguing against the common assumption that light and sound share a natural dictionary — note ≠ color. It closes with a working thesis for LightSound as an art form: not synchronization, but counterpoint — L(t) ∥ S(t), light and sound as parallel, non-subordinate voices.
